Our students have been asking me all year long "when do we get to paint?" I usually break up the year-long Visual Arts course by theme: Semester 1-Drawing and Semester 2-Painting. I want my students to have a solid background in drawing skills before we attempt painting because it is CHALLENGING! This half of the year is my favorite! Painting challenges my students in new ways and helps them to be innovators who are not afraid of failure.
My students get to explore and experiment with watercolor techniques, acrylic painting techniques and build up their knowledge of color theory and different painting styles so they can eventually explore on their own. My theme this year is "Loving Where I Live". My students will be reflecting on the beauty of our great state of California and showing their appreciation and pride through two larger painting projects. The first project will challenge students to incorporate atmospheric/linear perspective into natural and urban scenes. The second will be a more expressive and imaginative piece based on the culture of the Bay Area, where my students are from. I can't wait to start painting with my students and neither can they! We plan to have an end of year art show to show off all their hard work and let the community see what wonderful artists they are!
