My 5th grade class is the brightest group of student's that I have taught thus far! They've faced many academic and personal challenges, that could have forced them to give up. I met this group of Title 1 kids when they were in the 4th grade. It was at this time I had the chance to teach them language arts and fully understand their true academic dilemmas. Many of them were reading significantly below grade level and found it difficult to comprehend on grade level texts. In fact, their previous end of year data stated only 8% percent were considered proficient readers. However, I'm so proud to report that current data indicates 33% of the students are performing on grade level, and ALL students are expected to meet their growth score! These students are reading far beyond what many have expected, they take pride in their work and are hungry for deeper content knowledge. I'm excited that next year, we will not only exceed this goal, but be a role model for those around us!
