My students are third graders in a Spanish dual-immersion program. 75% of our students are Spanish-speakers from low-income families who live in crowded apartments surrounding our school. 25% of our students are English-speakers from more affluent neighborhoods.
All of my third graders are enthusiastic and engaged when given the chance to work with hands-on, inquiry-based science and math curriculum. They also enjoy writing about a variety science and social studies topics.
Our teaching team strives to create learning communities that meet the needs and interests of students, while maintaining highly rigorous learning expectations. Our difficulty is finding high quality lessons and materials in Spanish that match our new Common Core Standards.
