We have such incredibly bright children. They will grow up with such a gift to be literate in two languages! Our school is located in the most impoverished part of the city. This, as much as people have made it seem as a hindrance, has nothing to do with their mental capacity. I know my kids have so much potential and I can see their hunger for more knowledge. The only part about being inner-city kids that affects them is in the resources provided by our district. They love to read! Even my weakest reader picks up a book with such joy, sounds out a word syllable by syllable, raises his hand to read the words to me with every sentence. They know reading is a powerful tool. They know they have to read to be able to succeed in anything they do. When we were discussing why reading is important their responses ranged from "to read road signs and not get lost" to "I need to be able to ready my NBA contract". These are six-year-old children! They are bright beyond belief.
