This year, the 6th grade students in my classroom are struggling with emotional regulation and we have been working on zones of regulation, social skills, and anger management. Students in this academic setting more than likely have experiences some sort of trauma, and have difficulty expressing their emotions both in and out of crisis. The biggest issue within the classroom is the quick response to wanting to fight. A way for the students to reduce their frustration is to go with a staff member to the mat room, or the weight lifting room. However, that does not seem to tire them out enough. In my previous educational setting, the students were allowed to utilize a heavy bag and use that if something was bothering them. This reduced behavioral issues, referrals, and suspensions.
