The constant struggle to read and write has chipped away my students' confidence and motivation to master any skill related to reading and writing, so that engaging them in any task that involves reading or writing takes a lot of work.
But, if they were to fall into the sea of a moving and captivating story, they would want to read more. If they had more choices of accessible texts that tell wonderful stories, they would read more. If they could listen to some of the audiobook performers 鈥渞ead鈥 a story as they follow along in their own book, they would read more. If they could see themselves in the story, they would read more. And we know what the research says about reading more... it leads to increased comprehension and enjoyment.
Because my students come from low income homes with parents who work tirelessly to provide the basic needs for the family, it is very difficult to for them to afford the time needed to build an interest and passion for reading. So I am asking you to help me create a classroom library that would get my students to read more.
