The students in my classroom come from a diverse set of backgrounds. Their parents are, for the most part, in the service and labor industries, and often work long hours. Poverty is a prevalent reality for approximately half of all students in my classroom. As their parents strive to provide for their families, the children often don't get the chance to see how what they learn in school can be tied to real-life situations.
