Our school is a Title I school with a 91% free or reduced cost lunch rate. Fifty percent of our student population are English Language Learners (or ELLs). All teachers are ELA-E and/or ELA-S endorsed, which provides students with additional support while acquiring English as a second language.
My students are Spanish speakers who up until second grade have received classroom instruction almost entirely in Spanish. Some of these kids have only recently arrived in the U.S. They are inquisitive, motivated, and keenly aware that their language abilities affect their access to their education. Often, these students come from loving and hard-working families who unfortunately are unable to provide them reading materials in at home.
