My first graders come to me wanting to turn the letters they have learned into words and turning those words in to stories that they can read. My students come from wide ranging socio-economic backgrounds and family life. School is a place that they love to be because, at school, they are safe, important and they have a chance to learn about life outside their small scope of experience. I teach my students in order to be good at something you need to practice. Often you will hear a student tell another student, "Know how you can be a better reader? READ!" My students want to read and having books at their level will encourage them to read more and to each other. Reading is such a big part of first grade. It is up to us to encourage that love and knowledge of reading.
