How many of us have learned our ABCs, animals, and colors via songs and movement? How many of us are audiovisual learners? My students love to sing and dance and will do so all day, if I allow them to. We use singing and movement to get their attention and to teach them new concepts. Music is used as a cue to clean up or sit on the carpet. All in all, Music and movement is essential to the learning and development of youth. Music and movement can help improve social interaction, group participation, body awareness, memorization of learned concepts, gross motor skills, coordination, etc.
One of my students love to pick up pencils and pretend to play the drums. Imagine if we had an actual drumset in the classroom. Having musical instruments in the classroom will allow our students to not only listen and sing along to the songs they are learning, but to also create music themselves. This will make learning concepts more fun and easier! With these materials, the children will be able to explore new things that their families may not have the means or time to otherwise expose them to (e.g. yoga, which can also help with body awareness, control, and mental health). The updated CDs will contain music that they may hear on a daily basis and will make them even more enthusiastic to participate. If we have new/updated musical materials for the classroom, their learning experience will be one they will never forget!
