Standardized testing bullies kids into reading a certain "type" of literature. This has a tendency of turning students off to ANY type of literature because they assume that all reading is testing reading. Teaching in a Title I school has an increased challenge to find literature that engages students who may not be exposed to relevant readings at home or even within their cultural community. My students fall into the categories of: Predominantly male Parents did not attend college Discipline issues Low Self Esteem ESL SPED Lack of home support/live with guardians or alone Because of this, I am always on a quest to find literature that not only fires up their hearts, but also literature that is able to teach important socio-emotional learning components that are also missing from their repertoire of life experiences. Please help me build good readers and citizens.
