Put 7th graders on track for college!
I teach ancient world history to 7th graders at a college-prep charter school. Only a few years ago our school was one of the most violent and low-achieving middle schools in the city. Today, the same students outperform their suburban peers and have little to no violence in their school. At our school, students put in 150% grit and perseverance in their 7th to 12th grade years to develop the skills they will need to succeed in higher education. They deserve the resources to help them get there.
7th grade is THE critical year. Our students enter 7th grade with reading and writing skills that are years behind grade level. However, our 7th graders have shown they can make over 50% improvement in their reading scores in just 1 year. And they must. Our 7th grade students have to make HUGE gains to get on the college track and realize their dreams.
