I teach gifted and talented children in grades 1-5. The school is high poverty-97%. The majority of students live nearby in a large low income apartment complex. School truly is a haven for them. Many stay as late as possible to avoid being alone in that environment. The school has several after school programs until 6 PM and many of my students take advantage of these programs. Sewing is a skill only 3 of my 40 students have been exposed to. The heritage of handmade quilts, lovingly handed down from generation to generation will start with my students. The quilts they carefully craft will be the first handmade quilt in their home. I hope also to enrich their lives by teaching them the fundamentals of sewing. With this skill, they will be able sew, care for their clothing, and hopefully, pass this skill on to their children.
