First graders wiggle. A lot. Sometimes asking a first grader to sit still and write a story feels very much like asking a puppy to sit and stay. Sure, they can do it. For a moment or two. And then the wiggles begin. But why do we ask our six and seven year olds to sit still when they desperately need to be running, jumping, digging, climbing, waving, and skipping? Because sometimes we need them to be authors, artists, and readers. We need to teach them patient and perseverance and the joys of literacy and problem solving. In my class, I have many imaginative storytellers who struggle to get their ideas on paper because their bodies are in constant motion. Quite a few of my students are diagnosed with ADHD. They are excited readers who need to move along with the characters on the page. With these donut balls, my students will be able to move as they do best while at the same time stay focused on their tasks. I'm starting with yoga balls for now, but eventually, I would like to upgrade my entire classroom to alternative seating. Because why sit still? We are learners in motion! I thank you for your consideration in helping support my students.
