The titles selected in my project were chosen based on growing a wide collection of text focused on diverse cultures and social issues that are relevant to my students' lives. In addition, these titles were selected to introduce my wonderful students to cultures other than their own, so that they can grow to become empathetic and understanding individuals.
The novels I selected will give my readers a wide range to choose from in both reading level and topics of interest. Titles such as The Hate U Give will allow my students to develop an understanding of double consciousness, code-switching, and a deeper understanding of current events taking place in our society. Additionally, titles like Refugee and American Street will allow students to grasp a deeper understanding of what our country looks like from the eyes of others and will give students with similar experience a chance to see their own stories with the pages of a book. My hope is that you can see the value in diverse literature choices for students of all ages and backgrounds.
