My students are 4 - 7 year-olds who are classified as emotionally disturbed. They have an array of diagnoses, including Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Childhood Onset Schizophrenia, Attention Deficit Disorder, Personality Disorder NOS, Disruptive Behavior Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and many more. They struggle with hearing voices, not knowing how to control anger, and side effects from strong medication every day. All of this makes it difficult for them to attend to lessons in the classroom, even though they are expected to meet the same academic criteria as typical students of the same age, and are given the same tests and assessments. It is a struggle to provide these students with what they need to learn in one of the poorest neighborhoods in New York City. With very limited resources, I barely have enough chairs in my classroom for my twelve students - and spend hundreds from my own paychec
