As a first year teacher, I was lucky enough to receive some donations to at least start my first grade book collection. However, our classroom library is still quite limited and in need of lots of books!
I am a firm believer that literature should carry across content areas and have harnessed the power of reading to teach my students about what it means to be a global citizens and why it's important to take care of our world and each other. In addition to English, we have students who also speak Spanish, French, or Portuguese. There is a beautiful globe in our room that my students often explore and ask questions about their interest and curiosity in the colorful countries and landforms they observe. They learned quickly that I love to travel, as I have many artifacts displayed in our room from my adventures around the world. Since first grade is a very important reading year and I can only hope that my students will continue to fall in love with reading. I would love our library collection to encourage them to simultaneously fall in love with embracing others and spark an adventurous curiosity of the world.
