I want to incorporate more reading, writing and math within our classroom in addition to our functional curriculum to by giving my students access to materials that allow them to explore various subjects. I want them to enjoy literacy, mathematics, humanities and science.
By using tactile materials such as sandpaper letters and numbers, sensory brushes and slanted boards with raised paper and alternative pencils, my students can use their senses to connect to our lessons and explore new ideas. For example, using tactile materials helps my students feel the differences in items which we then apply to comparisons in math (fractions, portion, ratio), science (ecosystems, weather, liquids to solids), ELA (characterization, description) and S
social studies (various time periods, social celebrations, cultures). Being blind, deaf, cognitively delayed or medically fragile doesn't mean you can't learn, it means you learn differently.
I want my classroom to be inclusive so that each and every student has the chance to learn and grow.
