At my middle school, more than half of the students are on the free lunch program, a lot of them already have jobs, and still manage to fill my orchestra classroom with the brightest smiles you'll ever see. Their hearts are so warm, and their eyes have that sparkle in them. I schedule extra rehearsals for them afterschool, and they jump at the chance to improve themselves and get involved with something that keeps them off the streets. They willfully carry home their violins, violas, cellos, and yes, my tiny 6th graders can be seen wheeling off their HUGE basses, wearing an impeccable look of pride on their faces. Orchestra is quickly becoming their reason to stay in school, to continue in school, and to bond with their fellow students. These kids volunteer their time to decorate the room, perform for faculty meetings, as well as donate performances. My school cut orchestra classes to 3 days a week last year, but has changed back to everyday, so they are ready CATCH UP!
