In order to inspire a love of reading and support their growth, my students need a well stocked library with appropriate books that will be interesting to them. Because I previously taught 3rd grade, I just don't have enough books appropriate for Kindergarteners. Kindergarten is really where it all begins and students will need many opportunities to experience and interact with books. I am looking to build a rich library with a variety of fiction and nonfiction books.
The books I am requesting are books they can look at and read independently, as well as books that I will read out loud. Story time is much more than entertainment. It is a time when I model important reading strategies for my class and when we are able to discuss important elements of a story together. Reading more books aloud to my students is one of the things I am most excited about moving down to Kindergarten. I have a small but growing collection of stuffed animal puppets that make story time all the more engaging and fun. I can't wait to read these books with my Kindergarteners this year and get them excited about reading!
