My students are kind, dedicated, insightful and smart. They are a diverse group of young immigrant teenagers who represent more than 25 countries and who speak over 30 languages. Many of my students left their home countries escaping war, poverty, persecution or natural disaster. They have experienced life in a variety of ways and each brings with them into the classroom a spirit all their own. Despite these many assets, they know they're behind as compared to their American-born peers, so they work hard every day to fit a K-12 education in English into just a few years of high school. They struggle with typical teen issues, but for many, they're also struggling with mental health, learning to express themselves in a new language, adapting to a new culture, being separated from loved ones, and working to support their families.
