The number of students in schools across the country who are culturally and linguistically diverse is growing every year. These students, often referred to as English language learners or ELLs, are learning English while they also learn grade-level academic material. Because they have different levels of ability to communicate in English, they need support in the English language to help them be successful in school and beyond. It is expected that this population of students will continue to grow. The growing population of English language learners impacts school communities in many ways.
This project's focus will be on how my school community can work together with families to support our ELL student's learning. This is important because students benefit when families and schools work together. Family engagement practices, that I would like to provide with this project, will take into consideration students’ academic achievement and language development. I would like to encourage families to use these resources as a tool to support their child's English learning progress. The family packs, that I am requesting will provide engaging games both children and families will love! Each pack includes everything families need to play a language game to practice rhyming, vocabulary and more English skills learned throughout the year. Families of English language learners, who are often still learning the language themselves, must be made to feel a part of the school community. I would take the opportunity to invite families into the classroom and work with their children and make a difference in their English language learning.
