Reading to children is a powerful way to begin conversations about difference, tolerance, equity, and justice. In order to facilitate an environment where students can grapple with complex topics such as race, gender, ability, sexuality and class, our classroom library needs to be reflective of our world: diverse. More importantly our classroom library needs to be reflective of my students and their neighborhoods, families, communities. While 100% of my students are people of color, only 22% of children's books published in 2017 are about people of color. This donation will shift the percentage of stories in our classroom library that feature white, hetero and gender normative, able bodied, characters or perspectives to be inclusive of multiple perspectives.
Having a diverse library will not only be self-affirming to the students that I teach, it will foster an environment where rich discussions of difference take place. With these books I will be able to write Common Core aligned lessons to build speaking, listening, and comprehension skills as well as learners who question the world around them.
