At our Title One school 100% of our students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. They also learn French, Japanese, Spanish or Chinese from K-8. My students show "grit" every day by coming to school happy and ready to learn despite countless obstacles.
My third graders have high ideals at a time when others may not share their sense of optimism. I love this about them. We sit in our restorative circle every Friday morning and discuss how we feel about the world around us asking the student inspired questions.
They LOVE art, but we do not have an art program. I teach social studies and ELA, and decided to combine the three subjects. We will make paper cranes and send them overseas to be placed at the Sadako Memorial in Japan. We will discuss, in our safe space, and at their grade level, the sensitive subjects of war and peace.
