"Sometimes friends ARE your family" one of my students told us today when we started our unit on friends and family. This one sentence rang in my ear all day long, partially because I loved the comment for its accuracy, but mostly because of its heartbreaking pertinence to my students in particular. My students come from many broken homes, neighborhoods of extreme poverty, and grow up with only a limited sense of the kind of warmth a community can truly provide. In our school, I try each day despite issues with special needs, behavior management and children just beginning to learn boundaries and about the idea of respect, to enforce a sense of community and partnership.
