My students come from homes of poverty. More than half are learning English as a second language. Some of their parents are not able to read in any language and have had little or no schooling coming from countries as far as Somalia.
My students have very diverse needs when it comes to math. Most of them come to my class far below grade level in regards to their math skills. For some of my students, basic math skills such as addition and multiplication are very difficult. This poses a great challenge for them both inside and outside of school since buying groceries, managing a budget, and working any job involves some form of math skills. For my students to be successful in the future, they need to learn these basic math skills.
The best part of my job is the joy of learning my students bring to the classroom each day. They make tremendous progress academically each year because of their commitment to hard work and learning.
