Everyone is their own type of "smart." Some people are auditory learners, some are visual learners. Others are hands-on learners, while others benefit from using a screen. This generation of kiddos thrive on the use of technology. They have cell phones at young ages and most of the time know how to fix technology more than me! Recently, I have noticed a lack of motivation in my students when it comes to pencil and paper. We started writing on personal white boards, our desks and even the floor (whatever works!!). My kids would benefit from technology because it is what they are used to; it is what they are comfortable with. My kids benefit from revisiting information online from videos. As a new teacher, I have so many ideas and want to expose the kids to ways that will actually help them, but I have no working technology in my classroom (most days my promethean board doesn't even work). I want the kids to be able to draw, sort, manipulate tools on the chromebook where they don't have to worry about a sharpened pencil or ripping the paper while erasing their work. I can have them make videos explaining their answers instead of having them write it down (which is a struggle for some of my students), I can have them create projects and research topics for our informational writing pieces. The possibilities are endless! I know the total is a lot, but it would mean everything to us.
