My school is located in a large urban area in Michigan. They are mostly Mexican or Mexican American and for the majority of them, their first language is Spanish. Approximately 95% of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced lunch, according to federal guidelines. Common problems that face our students on a daily basis include gang violence, poverty, and parents being deported. Our school building itself is over 100 years old and lacks many things, most notably consistent heat. Some days, the boiler doesn't work and my classroom temperature has been as low as 38 degrees. Despite these challenges, my students still come to school, often attending class in their winter jackets.
