I believe that it is important that my students are able to read books by authors of color, who look just like them. It will give them the hope and belief that their imagination can take them further in life.
The 3 books that I am hoping to share with my students are 'The Hate U Give' by Angie Thomas, 'The Other Wes Moore:One Name, Two Fates' by Wes Moore, and 'Invisible Man' by Ralph Ellison. Each of these books share stories that are parallel to the challenges that face my students each day.
In 'The Hate U Give', a story is shared about street violence and the test of having to give up the street code of No Snitching, a true test that some of my students know all to well.
'The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates' tells the story about two young African-american men who both share the same name, grew up in similar violent areas of inner city Baltimore but took two different paths in life: one became a Rhodes Scholar turned White House Fellow and the other a convicted murderer. I believe my students can really relate to this story!
The final book that I am hoping will inspire my students is 'Invisible Man'. This story is a period piece that gives readers a glimpse of the narrators continuous rise and fall in life during the Jim Crow era.
All 3 of these stories, I believe, will greatly impact the trajectory of each of my students life. It will show them how decisions that they make in life can greatly affect their future. It will open their eyes to the possibility that the world holds greater opportunities beyond the city of Richmond and more importantly beyond my classroom.
