When I first began teaching, I was shocked by the fact that students were not supplied with the materials they needed to be successful in a school environment. I would actually have to fight for supplies for my students.
Providing my classroom with the requested items will ensure that students will be able to read, write, and collaborate with their peers regardless of their personal circumstance.
I always do my best to supply students with whatever I can, however, in my current school district I will receive *NO* funding to do so. This worries me! Please help me help them! ALL students deserve to have what they need to be the best readers, writers, and critical thinkers! With that being said, I leave you with this poem from the perspective of a student by Joshua T. Dickerson. I hope that one day all children are absolved of these sentiments!
鈥淐ause I Ain鈥檛 Got a Pencil鈥
I woke myself up
Because we ain鈥檛 got an alarm clock
Dug in the dirty clothes basket,
Cause ain鈥檛 nobody washed my uniform
Brushed my hair and teeth in the dark,
Cause the lights ain鈥檛 on
Even got my baby sister ready,
Cause my mama wasn鈥檛 home.
Got us both to school on time,
To eat us a good breakfast.
Then when I got to class the teacher fussed
Cause I ain鈥檛 got no pencil
