Reading books opens imagination by giving them an opportunity to travel to places they have never been. Books open the eyes to the world around them both fictional and non-fictional. Having a classroom library, having books close and readily available, also gives them opportunities and options of things to do that are classroom appropriate when they are finished with their work.
Do you remember being excited about picking up a book and reading? That is exactly what I want my students to experience by being able to pick their own reading material and dive into unknown worlds. Having an entire library for them will make this possible.
