The students in my classroom are eager to read and find books that interest them. Students are constantly choosing to read silently when given free time in the classroom and are always so excited to pick up their books during our "Stop, Drop, and Read" time. This week my students had the opportunity to participate in Read Across America and visit with a well known author, James Riley. This week, more than any other week, I heard students express their excitement towards reading! I don't want this excitement, engagement and interest to go away! These books will be used to develop reading skills and work towards 5th grade common core standards. These stories will promote a classroom of empathy, kindness, support, and respect. These books will emphasize student choice and student voice.
While the short stories will be used in read alouds and classroom meetings on the floor, the novels will be added to our library and used during literature circles and book clubs. Students will work towards mastering standards including some of the following concepts: theme, point of view, compare/contrast, main idea and details, vocabulary, and fluency. Students in our classroom are always eager to start reading new books brought into the classroom, and I know that the students will treat each new book as if it is their own, with love and respect.
