My 9th grade English students have a desire to learn and grow but given their generally below-grade-level reading skills and our lack of access to full sets of books, the most helpful activity for them, reading at home, is not always an option. I want to incorporate longer reading assignments in the Spring semester, particularly books they can read at home. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is a story of extreme hardships and extreme courage. Reading this will give my students access to a misunderstood part of our country's history and their own history as young black Americans.
