Traditional seating works in some classes, but I want to give students options for sitting in more unconventional arrangements. Students have frequent opportunities to read in my English class, and they often ask if they can sit on the floor. When I bring in beanbags or small stools from home, they beg me to be the one who gets to sit in an alternate seat. As students sit in a traditional desk, their blood pools in their bottoms and in their feet, which can make students feel tired. Offering alternate seating encourages student choice, movement, and comfort. Unconventional seating options suit the environment I am trying to establish in which students are not restricted in their seating or their self expression. Currently, I have a weekly raffle in which three students from each class can earn free seating. Once I have more alternate seats in the classroom, I will be able to offer free seating to even more students and improve my classroom environment.
