My students need backpacks, notebooks, pens, computers, fridges, coffee makers, and other supplies to help them adjust to college life so their campus becomes a comfortable home and they can excel in their classes without stress! Our Decision Day celebrates the post-secondary goals each of our students have pledged to pursue beyond high school. Since most of the households in our community do not have people who have earned a college degree, the ceremony where we honor these students is extremely motivational for the town. Students in grades 8-12 gather together to individually recognize each senior's next step! We want this day to be as special as possible for our students, helping the seniors feel prepared for the big life step of moving to a college campus, and to give the younger kids something to look forward to, which is why prizes and incentives go a long way.
While a mini fridge or a coffeemaker may seem affordable to most families, these are things that our students will never be able to afford on their own.
At our ceremony, each senior walks across the stage as the community cheers them on for pursuing their goals. Prior to the event, we host a pizza party for the seniors and give them individual gift bags with raffle tickets. We also write heartfelt letters to the seniors recognizing their effort and reminding them that we believe in them. At the party, seniors will have the opportunity to use tickets from their gift bags to "bid" on items donated from Ðǿմ«Ã½.org and select what they need for their next steps!
We want our lower income students to be successful in their studies and to feel like they fit in with the rest of the college-goers that might be coming from more affluent homes. These items will help our students overcome the hurdles and the barriers that make them want to drop out before earning a degree. It will also help them feel at home in their new space so they stay on campus and graduate! :)
