The majority of my students reside in the inner-city and are from low-income households; our entire student body is on free or reduced lunch, and many of them have limited access to books and computers. Additionally, our school is a title-one charter school with limited resources. Our students are not able to bring textbooks home because we do not have more than a class set at our disposal. Furthermore, in my experience, their literary tastes are very limited, and they are reluctant to read. It is my hope that having brand new texts and exotic-sounding reading selections will help to spark their interest.
