My students need a wide range of picture books. Picture books are often thought of as "little kid" books and are too young for fourth graders. However, my students absolutely love them and there are so many benefits to using picture books in upper elementary!
These books will be used as read aloud stories in class and to help students with their reading fluency in small groups. Picture books address a wide range of issues and can result in great group discussions. Some of these books address emotions, self esteem, and even historical events. Picture books also offer great practice identifying figurative language and parts of a story in an easier to manage text. Students are exposed to diverse stories and cultures through the text and illustrations of great picture books. I have students with a very large range of reading levels and picture books are a way to unite all abilities in the same story.
Please help us get more picture books! Not only do these help my students with literary skills, but they also make reading fun and interesting to students of all reading levels and backgrounds. We would greatly appreciate any help you are able to give!
