鈥淏ooks break the shackles of time 鈥 proof that humans can work magic.鈥 鈥 Carl Sagan
Many of my students are from low income families and have not had the benefit of growing up surrounded by books. My goal this year is to try to bridge this gap by building a classroom library full of high-interest and relatable books. Since July, I have been slowly building it by buying books that my students want to read. Some of the comments I hear from my students are rewarding. They say things like, 鈥淢s. S., you made me fall in love with reading,鈥 鈥淚 never finished a book before,鈥 I actually enjoy reading now.鈥 They are talking about what they are reading everywhere even during their snack and lunch time. They are recommending books to each other. There鈥檚 even a wait list in my classroom! In my 23 years of teaching, I can honestly say I have never seen students so excited about reading.
And that is the reason I am here asking for your help. I alone cannot do it. It does take a village. Together we can keep the magic alive.
