Our middle school is a diverse high-needs school of about 1,400 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Almost 50% qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many of our students receive services, including ESL, special education, and academic intervention. Scope’s philosophy is to use complex texts that meet today’s standards for all middle school students. The wide variety of genres that are presented will help children to become well-rounded students. Grammar and writing are also a big part of “Scope Scholastic” magazines and this is an area where my students can use support. My students are also highly driven by technology and Scope’s online resource is highly motivating to implement along with the hands on materials. In my past 15 years of teaching in the middle school, I've noticed a lack of motivation in the area of nonfiction. I'm hoping Scope will help peek my students' interest level in this area.
