Dignity is not something that is traditionally associated with the high school experience. As a school counselor who works in a high school for students with special needs, I would like to change that narrative and provide my students with the utmost respect and dignity when they need it the most.
We all know accidents happen when we least expect it and no one wants to experience a bathroom accident when they are not at home. Unfortunately, the students at my school experience bathroom accidents on a regular basis due to a myriad of reasons and when the accidents happen the school staff are almost always ill- equipped to fully help the student. If the parent has not sent in a change of clothes, the school staff helping the student has to find clothes and underwear to fit the student. My school has emergency clothes for our students to change into but we do not have underwear. Giving our student a pair of clean underwear to change into will give them the dignity they deserve after a suffering an embarrassing and potentially traumatic event.
