Scholastic News is a great nonfiction/current events magazine made to interest fifth graders. Providing this resource to my students allows them to receive real world news in a high interest and age appropriate way.
This resource supports the New York state standards across all of the content areas as well as inspire students to find interest in current events.
One of the 2017 issues of Scholastic News featured the articles, "Don't Be Fooled by Fake News!", "The Future of Flight" and "Should Schools Ban Dyed Hair?" (this issues debate), along with many others.
Each week students are able to participate in a debate based on the information provided in the magazine. Students pull out facts and think about the "pro" and "con" for each topic and work with their peers to plan their debate.
