Sitting in one spot during every performance can get boring, especially for percussionists. I would like to bring excitement to my classes by allowing my young students to move around as they learn! Most band instruments are portable, but percussion instruments are stationary (on stands). I would love for my students to be able to get up and move while playing their instruments.
My students truly enjoy getting out of their seats and marching around at fun events. Last year, we formed a parade and marched through the halls of the school! The students had so much fun that they were talking about it for the rest of the school year. I would like to do more of those performances. The movement also teaches them about endurance and technique, as it is much harder to march and play the instrument at the same time. I also feel that showing the students marching techniques now helps to better prepare them for high school.
