Being from Hawaii, my students come from an amalgamation of backgrounds and cultures; however, this also brings challenges. Many of them come from homes where English is spoken as a second language. Some of them have never been off our island or outside of the state, except when they immigrated. Having a household where parents work multiple jobs to care for families of five or more is a norm.
Our school is in an urban area. We work hard to keep students engaged in lessons despite things like dwindling parent involvement, faculty rotating in and out of the school and, hey, what public school couldn't use more funds from the state?
Despite these challenges, my students remain curious, eager to learn and all-around good kids at heart. They are family-oriented and try hard to make sure our classroom family continues to make the most out of learning each day.
