Did you know that the percentage of books depicting African/African American main characters is only 10%? And books depicting animals, other creatures, or inanimate objects as main characters is 27%? (Cooperative Children's Book Center, 2018). As the library media specialist, I want to provide resources and tools for my students that support the African American community and foster cultural awareness through literature. Mahogany Books has put together an amazing middle school collection that offers diverse characters, stories, and authors. During this time of virtual learning, my school library will be offering curbside service so students will be able to enjoy these new titles!
