Having a class set of the book Wonder will allow my students to have individual access to a copy of the book while we are reading and exploring its contents. The blank books will be a place where students can explore, write and draw about the characters in the book and, ultimately, reflect on their own characteristics and traits. The combination of these resources, will help my students explore the elements of fiction, strengthen their growth mindset and gain empathy/compassion for those who appear to be "different" than themselves.
With these novels and blank books, it is my goal for my students to embrace the over-arching theme: When given the choice, always choose KIND. Wonder is a great book for teaching the elements of fiction; especially character analysis. However, it is an even more powerful text for teaching kindness, compassion and understanding for those who appear to be "different". In a world where people are often judged by appearences, I feel that is important to impart the knowledge and strategies needed to truly see people for who they are and not simply for what they look like. In the process, my students will also explore their own character traits and discover for themselves how truly WONDERful they are!
