A 2007 study once labeled Kashmere High School as a "dropout factory", referring to the number of freshmen who do not make it through their senior year. In fact, the students at this school have received the lowest school ratings in the Houston Independent School District since 2002. Located in one of Houston's highest-poverty neighborhoods, Trinity Gardens, many students face daily hurdles that have been misidentified or unacknowledged.
Fortunately, this is a NEW year. In 2018 - 2019 I have joined Kashmere High as a Dyslexia Interventionist. Of the nearly 725 students enrolled, at least 20% of them require special education services and now many more will receive intensive, highly specialized Dyslexic interventions. More than 35 students have been identified, but several more are expected following the beginning of the year screening for incoming freshmen and transfers.
