My classroom sees over 800 student in a week! I teach grades PK-5 music education at a Title 1 school in southeast Houston, Texas. I teach a high number of English Language Learners.
Music education does so much to support learning English learners by reading lyrics, memorization, a increasing vocabulary. Music supports social emotional learning and academic skills by increased focus, motivation and mindfulness via breathing and practice of musical instruments. Singing a song supports mental health and a wide variety to emotions are expressed and released through the performance of music. Music is active! My students move rhythmically, dance, actively listen, and play in each class. Music supports reading and math skills by teaching patterns, fractions in rhythmic subdivision, symbolic reading of notation and lyrics in song and chant.
I strongly believe every child is a musician and music is for every child.
