Flexible seating allows students to make decisions about their learning as well as help them discover what kind of learning environment works best for them. During their practice block, students are able to choose where they sit. Currently, students are able to sit at their desks, on a rolly chair, on the floor with a whiteboard, or sit outside on the floor with a whiteboard.
I've noticed that my students are noticeably more engaged, motivated, and less disruptive. I also want to create a comfortable and open environment for my students, a safe space where my students feel accepted and heard and I believe giving them various seating options is one way to make them feel that way.
The beanbag chairs will help give them additional seating options, including group work, independent work, and even one-on-one tutorials during class. Since they are lightweight it makes them easy to transport to any part of the classroom. The rug will be in the back of the room and if students wish to sit on the floor they can sit here, instead of sitting on the cold hard floor. Lastly, the clipboards can be used for students that choose to sit/lay on the floor, sit in the beanbag chairs, or during stations when students are required to constantly move around the room.
My students love to have a say in their learning, and I feel like this is another great way to give that to them.
