I teach wonderful and amazing humans. Period.
My school is incredibly unique, in that it perfectly encapsulates what it is like to live and work in the community of Oakland. There is a diverse group of students here, who want to figure out their own purpose in life.
One of the best things I love about being an English teacher is the ability to not only teach students great works of literature, but to support them in their social emotional learning through their capacity to try to understand and empathize with multiple characters from the texts we read in class. I do my best to incorporate texts and novels written by authors of all different backgrounds, whom students can also identify with. Furthermore, I truly believe teaching has to come from the heart.
