Having a listening center for emergent and beginning readers is crucial in supporting developing reading skills. Listening to reading develops listening skills. It also provides students with a model for "book language" and drama, and feeds the imagination.
The simplicity of listening to a story while looking at the book in one's lap, turning the page at the "ding"- this is still a powerful way to foster a love of reading and a desire to be an independent reader. I have always had listening centers in my classroom and our school has a great amount of book sets with cassettes and cds. These sets have outlasted all of the listening centers I've used and band-aided over the years. I am excited by the potential for a working (with wireless headphones!) listening center to add to my classroom centers.
